You Spoke, We’re Listening: What Our 2024 Survey Revealed About Mental Load, Clutter and Craving Simplicity

In late 2024, I reached out to the Be Simply Free community with one simple question:

 

"Can you help me help you?"

 

Over 300 women took the time to respond. You generously shared your current challenges, needs and hopes when it comes to decluttering your homes, calendars and minds—and especially, lightening the mental load.

Here’s what you told me… and how Be Simply Free is responding.

 

The Mental Load Is Heavy – and Often Invisible

A massive 89 percent of you described the mental load as overwhelming.

  • 52 percent said it’s somewhat overwhelming

  • 37 percent said it’s extremely overwhelming

The stories behind the numbers were powerful. Many of you said you feel like the default manager of the household. You're juggling the logistics, the emotions, the mental to-do lists—and you're doing it silently.

You're ready to create systems that everyone in your household can follow—without being asked.

 

Clutter Is a Constant Challenge

When asked about problem areas around clutter, some strong themes emerged.

  • Paperwork and sentimental items were top of the list

  • Kids’ artwork, toys, and physical or digital photos were close behind

  • Most of you had started decluttering, but felt stuck when life got busy

What you want is guidance that’s simple and step-by-step. Something realistic. Something you can do in pockets of time, not just during massive all-weekend clean-outs.

 

Digital Overload Is the New Clutter

Many of you said that even though you want to reduce screen time, you feel stuck in habits or overwhelmed by your devices.

You mentioned needing support to:

  • Clean up phone photos, apps and email inboxes

  • Set boundaries around phone use

  • Find freedom from endless scrolling

The need for digital decluttering is real—and rising.

 

How You Want to Be Supported

Here’s what you told me helps most:

  • Bite-sized content you can take action on straight away

  • Visuals, checklists and short videos to guide you

  • Realistic support that’s flexible and judgement-free

  • Help to find even 14.4 minutes a day to make progress
