Turn Excess Clutter into Just in Case Kits

Save Time & Money, Reduce Plastic & Clutter

Life rarely unfolds exactly the way we expect. School pickups change, work meetings run late, kids get muddy at the park, weather turns quickly or someone suddenly needs a snack. When you are rushing, these small surprises can feel stressful and expensive. This is why I love having a few just in case kits ready to grab and go.

These kits are not about buying more things. They are about using the excess items already in your home to make life easier. Instead of clutter sitting in drawers and cupboards with no purpose, you can turn it into a simple system that saves money, reduces single use plastic and keeps your daily stress levels lower.

Preparedness does not need to be complicated. It just needs a little thought and a few minutes of setup using what you already own.

Why It Makes Sense to Use What You Already Own

Decluttering is not always about throwing things away. It is also about recognising the value of what you already have. Many homes contain doubles and triples of basic items that rarely get used. Rather than letting these items gather dust, you can put them to work.

Some examples include:

  • Spare phone chargers for work bags and glove boxes
  • Extra drink bottles for the car
  • Reusable cutlery and straws for picnics or unexpected outings
  • Towels and spare clothes for messy play
  • Toiletries that can live permanently in the car or handbag

When everything has a purpose, clutter naturally reduces. You stop buying last minute items when you are out and about, you waste less, and daily life becomes easier because you have what you need before you even realise you need it.

This simple mindset shift is one of the most powerful parts of living a more intentional and organised life.

My Three Go To Just in Case Kits

Over the years, I have created three core kits that I reach for constantly. They save me time, money and decision making. These kits are designed to suit family life, work days and everyday errands.

Car Boot Box

A car boot box is a game changer for families. It usually includes:

  • Drink bottles
  • Reusable cutlery and straws
  • Non perishable snacks
  • Spare clothes for kids and adults
  • Towels and spare shoes
  • Reusable shopping bags
  • Toiletries and wipes
  • First aid items
  • A small amount of cash

This box makes spontaneous outings stress free. Whether the kids want to stop at the beach or you end up outside longer than planned, you have everything you need. It also stops unnecessary purchases that clutter your home later.

Laptop Bag or Work Bag Pencil Case

This small kit lives in my everyday work bag. It usually includes:

  • Phone charger and headphones
  • Cash for parking
  • Band aids and pain relief
  • Pens and USB
  • Eye mist and lip balm

This kit eliminates last minute panic when something goes wrong during a workday. It keeps you organised, prepared and able to focus on what matters without scrambling for essentials.

Handbag Bits and Bobs Bag

This is my everyday lifesaver. Inside you might find:

  • Portable charger
  • Metal straw
  • Kids cutlery
  • Mini toys
  • Toiletries and feminine products
  • Mini first aid items
  • Lip balm

It stops your handbag becoming a cluttered mess and ensures you are ready for anything from a quick playground stop to a spontaneous dinner.

The Hidden Benefits of Just in Case Kits

Just in case kits offer more benefits than convenience. They help you:

  • Save money by reducing impulse purchases
  • Cut down on waste by using reusable items
  • Reduce mental load because you are prepared
  • Declutter by giving unused items a purpose
  • Feel calmer and more in control of daily life

Preparedness is a powerful form of self care. It supports you, reduces stress and makes the unexpected feel manageable rather than chaotic.
